AUGUST
KRANTI MAIDAN
The August Kranti Maidan, formerly known as Gowalia Tank, is a popular playground in South Mumbai mostly thronged by young boys for their evening dose of a good game be it cricket or football. Split into several sections, it serves as a large play area for children as well as a promenade for people to walk. It also houses a marble pillar known as the Gandhi Smruti Stambh, commemorating the historic event that once took place here.

History says
August 8, 1942 isn’t just another sepia-toned day in the history of the Indian Independence struggle. On this very day, Mahatma Gandhi called a mass gathering at the Gowalia Tank and gave a speech as part of the Quit India Movement. “Ouit India” went on to become a mantra chanted by Indians to threaten the British of the consequences if they continued to rule the country. The assembly helped channelise the discontent, thus giving birth to the Civil Disobedience Movement. It is only after this event that Gowalia Tank, then a ground with a water body built to bathe cows, came to be known as August Kranti Maidan.
