JALLIANWALA
BAGH
In the northern part of Amritsar lies a public garden which—despite its tranquil appearance—is a landmark in India’s struggle for freedom. Known as the Jallianwala Bagh, this peaceful, verdant garden has a tragic history. A vast ground with narrow alleys for entry and exit, as you walk past the bullet-ridden walls, you can almost imagine the horrific massacre that took place here.
History says
Jallianwala Bagh, as we have all read in our history books, is the place of the notorious massacre of approximately 1000 Indians although the official British Raj sources listed the fatalities at 379 who had gathered there for a peaceful meeting on Baisakhi Day. On the command of the British officer General Dyer, soldiers relentlessly shot down all who were present there. Some of them even leapt into the nearby well to avoid being shot down. Some of the walls have been preserved as they were and the bullet holes are still visible. The east end has a large memorial built in the memory of those who died there.
Getting there
Jet Airways has regular flights to Amritsar from New Delhi. There are several tour packages that take visitors to Jallianwala Bagh.
