Mani Bhavan Mumbai
MANI
BHAVAN
Though many of us remain unaware of Mumbai’s significance in the Indian freedom struggle, tucked away in the heart of this bustling city is a quaint little bungalow that was the birthplace of some of Gandhiji’s most revolutionary political ideas and movements. Now an intriguing museum that houses historic memories in the form of Gandhian literature, pictures, films, sculptures, mini figures, Gandhiji’s personal chorkho (spinning wheel) and related memorabilia, visiting Mani Bhavan is like taking a lesson in history. It takes visitors back in time by conjuring up a vivid recap of Gandhiji’s life and the series of events that ultimately led to India’s Independence.
Getting there
Mani Bhavan is located on Laburnum Road at Gamdevi in South Mumbai. Jet Airways has daily flights to Mumbai from across the country.
History says
Mani Bhavan belonged to Gandhiji’s friend Revashankar Jagjeevan Jhaveri. During the turbulent period between 1917 and 1934, this simple two-storey bungalow served as Gandhiji’s Mumbai headquarters, from where the Father of the Nation initiated the Civil Disobedience, Satyagraha, Swadeshi, Khadi and Khilafat movements. Mahatma Gandhi also had a room for himself in the bungalow, and efforts have been made to preserve its original setting.
