SABARMATI
ASHRAM & DANDI YATRA
Sabarmati Ashram, famously known as Gandhi Ashram or Satyagraha Ashram is situated on the banks of its name sake, the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad. Established in 1917, the ashram houses a museum called Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalay designed by Charles Correa and inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1963. The museum showcases historic events of Gandhiji’s life and details of his work and teachings. The activities here vary from exhibiting archival material to publishing Mohodevbhoi ni Diary, which commemorates entire episodes of the Indian freedom struggle. Gandhian thoughts are essayed and kept alive with a lot of stucN, and research by maintaining contact with the student community. The ashram is open throughout the year and a sound and light show runs all through the week in three languages, Hindi, Gujarati and English for a minimal fee.
History says
Sabarmati Ashram is a significant landmark as it witnessed many events related to the Independence crusade, one of which was the Dandi March initiated by Mahatma Gandhi on March 12, 1930 against the British Salt Act. The Mahatma led thousands to Dandi and broke the salt laws laid down by the British. The Salt Satyagraha drew worldwide attention and lasted for almost a year. Sabarmati Ashram has come to symbolise everything Mahatma Gandhi strove for and his commitment to the values of truth and non-violence.
