Alwar is a pleasant little town with more greens than any other place in Rajasthan. The city came into prominence when it got itself freed from the control of Jaipur State in the 18th century. Alwar is the city nearest to New Delhi. Beautiful palaces, jungles and some fine heritage hotels make it a worthwhile Rajasthani destination in hand's reach.

The City Palace is a beautiful and imposing building in perfect condition. The government museum of Alwar has some of the finest exhibits including the rare miniature paintings on ivory.

Sariska Tiger Reserve: The picturesque jungles of Sariska have tigers, wild boars, spotted deer, blue bulls, etc in good numbers. The protected park can be visited in jeep safaris. The best way is to stay in the pleasant Sariska Palace (located within the forest) and take two or three wildlife safaris at different times of the day. There is another picturesque location a few miles away by the side of Lake Siliserh, where one can consider staying.

Neemrana and Kesroli: One of India's finest heritage hotels is the Neemrana fort on the Delhi-Jaipur highway. It is the oldest fort that has been converted into a hotel and a stay here is definitely for the people with elite tastes. The fort has been carefully revived with each of its stunning rooms refurbished on a specific theme. 20 kilometers outside Alwar is another rustic fort Kesroli that has been converted into a character hotel.
